12/6/4Inspired by the usual year-end countdowns, and in the tradition of High Fidelity:
Top 5 pop albums of the 80's:
- Synchronicity - The Police
- Born In The USA - Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band
- The Joshua Tree - U2
- Rio - Duran Duran
- Kick - INXS
I'm open to comments, but that's a pretty definitive list. Sports by Huey Lewis And The News could squeeze in there.
Top 5 rock albums of the 90's:
- The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails (five years later, I can't stop raving!)
- Temple Of The Dog
- 40 oz. To Freedom - Sublime
- Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Korn
Number one is for sure, but that was a lot harder, and I could easily hear arguments that would shred me (I don't even own OK Computer by Radiohead, for example). I think the decade isn't far enough away yet to be cemented in my mind.
Top 5 classic rock albums of the 60's and 70's:
- Darkside Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
- The White Album - The Beatles
- Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin
- Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
- L.A. Woman - The Doors
Admittedly, my age makes it difficult to seperate the decades, so I combined them. Rumors by Fleetwood Mac barely misses. With more to choose from, I'm sure someone can point out an obvious ommision.
Realistically, the first list is deliberately narrower, cuz I qualified it as "pop", and the second list says "rock" since hip-hop clearly took a firm artistic stance in the 90's. I respect the genre, but own too little of it to be able to make legitimate claims. More genre-specific lists would be easier to create:
Top 5 pre-grunge metal albums:
- Master Of Puppets - Metallica (the peak of the genre)
- Paranoid - Black Sabbath (the definition of the genre)
- Back In Black - AC/DC (a debut, comeback and finale all in one)
- Powerslave - Iron Maiden
- British Steel - Judas Priest
See. That was more fun. Let the bashing begin.
Top 5 recent albums I wish I had, but I'm in severe debt:
- American Idiot - Green Day
- Contraband - Velvet Revolver
- Has Been - William Shatner
- Absolution - Muse
- eMOTIVe - A Perfect Circle
Think of that as my Christmas wish list.
