Last week I finished work at an industrial park in south Orange County, just blocks from a local library. In recent months I've been seeking out the few letterbox/geocache hybrids listed within fifty miles of home, and there was one down here in Foothill Ranch on a little hike. Upon nearing the location, I came across a group of around eight mule deer quietly grazing just off the trail. Living in the urban jungle, it isn't very often I see actual wildlife up close, even on my many letterboxing adventures. We hung out for a while just staring at each other.
In contrast, today I headed to the opposite end of the urban sprawl, to Santa Clarita for a box commemorating the 100th anniversary of the building of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. They were taking a group of 100 mules on a trek along it's length over several days, and this was the day they were passing through the canyon where the box was planted, at a trail overlook where you could see a cemetery nearby. They had them resting in corrals and were giving visitors a history lesson.
